Perhaps the surprising thing isn’t that we sometimes struggle.
We’re trying to meet our needs, navigate relationships, make sense of the past, anticipate the future, manage uncertainty and deal with whatever life happens to throw at us…
NO WONDER ●
We feel safe enough, connected enough and free enough. We have people to love, things that matter and space to be ourselves.
We can think, feel, imagine, learn and adapt. Stretch when life asks more of us and settle when it’s time to rest.
Not everything is perfect.
But we have what we need to meet life as it comes.
When life works.
But life happens…
Things change. People leave. Relationships strain. Work overwhelms. We lose things, get hurt, make mistakes, face things we never saw coming and go far too long without enough of what we need.
So we adapt: We worry - Avoid - Overthink - Push harder - Shut down - Keep busy - Try to stay in control.
The things that helped us cope can become the things that keep us stuck.
No wonder ●
It shows up in all sorts of ways.
Anxiety. Sleepless nights. A short fuse. A loss of confidence. Feeling flat, frightened, overwhelmed or stuck.
Sometimes there’s an obvious reason. Sometimes it’s harder to put your finger on.
Whatever’s going on, we’ll start there:
-
Worry · racing thoughts · panic · stress · overthinking · feeling unable to switch off
Anxiety can show up in lots of ways — constant worry, racing thoughts, physical tension, panic, overthinking or simply feeling as though you can never properly switch off.
We’ll look at what may be driving the anxiety, help calm the emotional arousal that can keep it going, and find practical ways to help you regain a greater sense of calm and control.
We might work on:
Understanding triggers · calming anxious responses · breaking cycles of worry · reducing overthinking · rebuilding confidence · practical tools you can use outside therapy -
Feeling flat · disconnected · unmotivated · hopeless · lacking energy or enjoyment
Low mood can leave everything feeling harder. You might have lost motivation or enjoyment, feel disconnected from other people, struggle to see a way forward or simply not feel like yourself.
Together, we can look at what may be contributing to how you feel, which important needs aren’t being met, and what could begin to restore movement, meaning and connection.
We might work on:
Understanding what’s changed · reconnecting with important needs · restoring motivation · interrupting unhelpful thinking patterns · rebuilding connection and purpose -
Self-doubt · limiting beliefs · assertiveness · feeling not good enough
Low confidence can affect how we see ourselves, the choices we make and what we believe is possible. Sometimes it follows a difficult experience; sometimes the patterns have been there for much longer.
We can explore what’s keeping those patterns in place and work towards a more balanced, confident relationship with yourself and the world around you.
We might work on:
Self-belief · assertiveness · negative thinking · boundaries · confidence in social or professional situations · moving beyond old patterns -
Frustration · irritability · strong reactions · feeling out of control
Anger is a normal human emotion, but it can become exhausting when it feels too intense, happens too often or begins affecting your relationships and everyday life.
Rather than judging the anger itself, we’ll get curious about what’s underneath it, what triggers it and what could help you respond differently.
We might work on:
Recognising triggers · understanding unmet needs · regulating strong emotions · changing habitual responses · communication · finding healthier ways to respond -
Difficulty falling asleep · waking in the night · an overactive mind · stress-related sleep problems
When we’re anxious, stressed or emotionally overwhelmed, switching off can become surprisingly difficult. Poor sleep then makes almost everything else harder.
We can look at what may be interfering with your natural sleep patterns and work with practical techniques to help your mind and body settle.
We might work on:
Reducing emotional arousal · calming a busy mind · sleep routines · relaxation · addressing worries that keep you awake -
Specific fears · avoidance · panic responses · anxiety that feels difficult to control
A fear response can become attached to situations, places, objects or experiences even when another part of you knows you’re safe.
Human Givens therapy offers practical ways of working with these learned responses so they no longer have the same hold over you.
We might work on:
Reducing fear responses · managing anxiety · changing learned associations · rebuilding confidence · reducing avoidance -
Communication · conflict · boundaries · recurring patterns · relationship difficulties
Relationships are where many of our most important needs are met — and where some of our greatest difficulties can arise.
Whether something has changed in a particular relationship or you keep finding yourself caught in familiar patterns, therapy can give you space to understand what’s happening and consider what needs to change.
We might work on:
Communication · boundaries · conflict · recurring relationship patterns · confidence · understanding your own needs and those of others -
Bereavement · separation · family difficulties · career changes · major life transitions
Life can change quickly — and even changes we choose can leave us feeling unsettled, overwhelmed or unsure of who we are now.
Therapy can help you process what has happened, make sense of your response and begin finding your footing again.
We might work on:
Loss and grief · adapting to change · difficult experiences · emotional overwhelm · rebuilding confidence · finding a way forward -
Pressure · procrastination · confidence · focus · performance anxiety · overwhelm
Sometimes the pressure to perform becomes the very thing that gets in the way of performing well.
We can look at what’s happening beneath stress, procrastination, perfectionism or performance anxiety and find practical ways to help you think more clearly and use your abilities more effectively.
We might work on:
Performance anxiety · procrastination · perfectionism · confidence · focus · stress · preparing for challenging situations -
Lacking direction · wanting something to change · making decisions · feeling there should be more
You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.
Sometimes life is broadly okay, but something feels stuck. You may want greater clarity, need to make a decision, recognise an old pattern you’re ready to change or simply want life to feel different from how it does now.
We might work on:
Clarity · decision-making · direction · recurring patterns · confidence · motivation · meaningful change
Hi, I’m Vanessa.
I’ve always been interested in how life works. I’ve studied many modalities and was inevitably drawn to Human Givens as a modern, effective, practical, evidence-based framework for making sense of what’s happening and doing something to do about it.
Together we’ll make sense of what’s happening for you and then use that understanding to work on patterns that keeps repeating, settle emotional responses that’ve become too sensitive, change the way you’re thinking about things, build confidence, solve practical problems, or find a better ways to meet your needs.
Let’s start here.
You’ve probably thought about it enough. Let’s see what changes when we do something with it.
An hour to make sense of what’s happening and do something useful with what we find.
Sessions are 60 minutes, online or in person in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire.
If we haven’t met before, we’ll begin with a free Discovery Call to get acquainted and hear a little about what brings you here. From there, we’ll arrange your first session and take it one session at a time.
Not quite ready?
